10 Recent Overhyped Video Games That Absolutely Flopped

The video game industry is fuelled by hype. Popular sequels are announced and games are built with hype over various years of development cycles. However, not every game lives up to the hype, and even the most anticipated titles can fall short come release.

Every year we’re graced with hundreds of game announcements, each trying to showcase the immersive nature of their gameplay through flashy trailers and explosive screenshots.

Gaming conferences see developers take to the stage with their bubbly personalities, hyping up the next big triple A title. It’s a popular marketing technique that gets the crowd pumped and gamers ecstatic to get their hands on the next big release.

In recent years, it’s become much more prevalent for games to push for higher and higher standards that by the time of release, they’re on a pedestal of huge expectations. In some situations they’re achieved and exceed expectations. But in others, the pedestal breaks away and the title fails to live to the hype.

For every Overwatch, there’s a Lawbreakers. When there’s a Destiny, there’s an Anthem. The market constantly tries to use the formula of other games to build anticipation around their own, more often than not, failing to do so.

Other times, false promises or an exaggeration of what to expect can fail to meet the demands of players, despite years eagerly awaiting the title.

So, without further ado, here are ten recent examples which have reached to the stars in building hype, but failed to deliver on those high expectations on release.
